How to Get from Kangra Airport to Dharamshala

Kangra Airport is at Gaggal, southwest of Dharamshala, in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. The Airports Authority of India and Himachal Tourism give the distance to Dharamshala as 14 km; the District Kangra government gives 10 km. The government identifies Gaggal as the nearest airport to McLeod Ganj, a suburb of Dharamshala also known as “Little Lhasa” or “Dhasa.”

Himachal Tourism describes the drive between Kangra and Dharamshala as an 18 km gradual uphill route. That figure describes the route between those towns, not a journey time from the airport to McLeod Ganj.

A taxi is the clearest option for onward travel, but Himachal Tourism does not give an airport pickup point, fare or operating hours. It says taxis for destinations are readily available in Dharamshala, so confirm pickup arrangements directly before you travel.

Himachal Tourism also describes regular public and private bus services between Dharamshala and Delhi, Chandigarh, Pathankot, Kullu-Manali and Shimla. The Airports Authority of India reports a first-aid facility at Kangra Airport. It also reports fuel at the aerodrome, but does not specify passenger-facing fuel services or other terminal amenities. Flight schedules and transport arrangements can change, so check the official site before you go and confirm your onward pickup with your transport provider.

Arrange a car or taxi for the drive to Dharamshala. The drive to Turkish Cottage takes about 50 minutes; use that as the stated journey time rather than treating the airport-to-town route distance as a travel-time estimate.
